Dear Community Member:

The District’s Master Plan Steering Committee held its third meeting on January 14th in the RCK library. The meeting was attended by 52 individuals representing committee members and interested citizens.

The superintendent and the district’s consultant led discussions on the following topics:

I. A recap of the committee’s January 5th meeting with the Board of Education. Topics reviewed included the board’s direction on the abolishment of sixth grade centers and the implementation of a consistent grade alignment pattern as components of the Master Plan

II. A review of the other planning areas that will ultimately be addressed as part of the development of the Master Plan to include a review of existing facilities and infrastructure, building/program accreditation, transition planning and redistricting

III. Sub-committee progress reports which were mostly of an organizational nature

IV. Clarification of how school enrollment capacities will be calculated as a basis for developing facility and program scenarios

V. An outline of the pertinent information (e.g. pros and cons, staffing & transportation implications, etc.) to be included in the scenarios to be developed.

The next committee meeting is scheduled for 7p.m. on Thursday, February 12th at the John Jay High School. At this meeting, the committee will begin to develop building/program scenarios as a basis for Master Plan recommendations to be presented to the Board of Education. Sub-committee meetings are being held on an on-going basis. As scenarios are developed, relevant information will be shared on the district’s website.

Over the next few weeks, it is intended that a survey instrument will be developed to solicit community input on program/facility issues as a basis for substantiating recommendations. Further information will follow.

Regards,

Dick Powell
