Athletics have had a
significant influence on American culture and society and enjoys a unique
status in the American value system. We believe that participation on an
interscholastic athletic team is a worthwhile experience, which all students
should have the opportunity to pursue. We take great pride in our
athletic programs. We believe athletics is an integral part of the Wappingers
Central School District educational program and have it organized to meet the
needs and interests of our students.

Concussion Management Law

Athletic Placement Process (APP)
Clarification Regarding Maturity Assessment and Tanner Staging:
Previously the Selection Classification Process required the Tanner Staging to indicate the maturity level of a student. The requirement meant the student must be at an identical level of development indicated by the Tanner staging. The Tanner staging was not realistic as there is a range of ages playing at a high school competition level. Beginning in the 2015-2016 school year, the Athletic Placement Process (APP) Maturity Assessment Standards were revised. The medical director is now instructed to take into consideration the height, weight, muscle mass, and Tanner staging as compared to the other athletes he/she would compete. This language allows a physician to use their professional judgment taking into account the totality of the student’s overall physical development. The Tanner Staging is required; however the Tanner rating in the APP document is only a recommended number. The medical director reviews the information gathered from the physical, student’s physical size and the Tanner Staging. They then render a decision on whether or not, in their professional opinion, the student is at an appropriate developmental level to compete with other athletes in the desired sport and level of competition.
