Do you like spending time enjoying the out of doors?
If you answered yes to these questions, then you may want to become a member of the Oak Grove Landscape and Nature Department. The club is open to all fourth and fifth graders. The goal of the club is to continue the beautification of Oak Grove School and investigate other areas for nature study around our school. Meetings will be held in Room 27 on Tuesdays, immediately after school, from 3:40 to 5:00 pm.
In the last few years, L.A.N.D. designed carried out many environmental projects on the Oak Grove property. They maintain the gardens along the fence, as well as a Memorial Garden, a Butterfly Garden, and the Cafeteria Garden. They have also naturalized a grassy area with 800 daffodil bulbs at the entrance to the school. Members set up and maintain the Winter Garden in the school lobby. They annually research and label trees on the property, creating a Tour of the Trees. They have also designed and set up a number of Nature Trails, focusing on a variety of environmental topics, including the value of trees, invasive species, and bluebirds. They learned how to propagate and care for house plants and hold their annual Plant Sale in the spring. This year, the club members will continue these efforts and look for other areas of nature to investigate in and around the school.
As a result of the efforts of previous members of L.A.N.D., the club was recognized with a National Arbor Day Foundation Education Award in April, 2003. Later in 2003, they received a grant from the Entergy Corporation to build a sunshed on the school property. The Hudson Valley Magazine recognized the club in their "The Best of..." issue (November, 2003). Good work, L.A.N.D. Members!
