Welcome to the pathfinder for Ms. Wells' Honors Biology cancer assignment

Print Resources:

Using the blue Big6 Research Organizer, brainstorm for keywords for searches in catalog,
databases and search engines. Catalog is located on any networked
computer in the "Students" Folder (OPAC icon - the one with books!)
When you find a source, see if you can find more keywords and go further!

Evaluate the resources to see if they'll work for your purposes. Are they current?

Library webpage has link to public library catalog if you're still in need of print resources.

Reference Book Ideas: remember to check the index of similar titles for more!

REF 616.994 GAL - Gale Encyclopedia of Cancer - a good place to start!
REF 616 HUM - Human Diseases and Conditions

Which of these sources will work best for your assignment?

Computer Resources:

For this assignment, you are looking for published information relevant to cancer research.
Databases available through the RCK Library Webpage actually have periodical articles accessible electronically.
Passwords are available in the library.:

EBSCO - a collection of 800 magazines for current, published articles

Gale  - actually a few different databases -
Health Reference Center Academic as well as
Custom Newspapers - (150 newspapers, both national and international) and
NYS Newspapers - (ten major newspapers published in the state of New York, including the New York Times.)

SIRS - another good source of published information, watch the dates, though

Websites are ok as long as they have been verified!
To best use the Internet: Instead of a search engine,
which brings up random, sometimes misleading information,
(who is that Jeeves guy, anyway?)
use a subject directory to access already organized websites:

Start with RCK Library Webpage's link to
LIFELINES
a pre-selected and verified compilation of excellent sites.

Internet Public Library
a quick search brings a wealth of informative sites

or

Digital Librarian:
a librarian's choice of the best of the Web

Move on to the following:

http://www.accessexcellence.org/RC/#science
Access Excellence Resource Center from the National Health Museum

http://www.emc.maricopa.edu/faculty/farabee/biobk/biobooktoc.html
Online Biology Book of Estrella Mountain Community College

http://cellbio.utmb.edu/cellbio/
maintained by University of Arkansas' Dr. Gwen Childs

http://www.cellsalive.com/
lots of flash - still some good info!

Lastly, use a reliable search engine but you must
CHECK EACH SITE FIRST FOR ACCURACY!

Use our Website Criteria Worksheet  to verify any site

How to put it all together:

Take notes using ideas in the WCSD's Research Skills Guide Required for Grades Nine thorugh Twelve.
