Science Outcomes
Grade 3

Abilities Outcomes
1. Students develop abilities in analysis, inquiry and design.
A.Students model what a scientist does as they engage in problem-posing, observing, predicting,
describing, comparing, measuring, data gathering, drawing conclusions, and revising their ideas and
solutions about a variety of investigations.
B.Students engage in the engineering design process as they design and build an electrical game board.
C.Students engage in a research project related to a question they raise aboutwater as a resource for
life.

2. Students develop math abilities.
A.Students create, read, and interpret graphs and charts.

3. Students develop communication abilities
A.Students develop communication and cooperative group skills as they discuss and share their
findings and write in their science journals.

Content Outcomes
1. Students model who a scientist is and what a scientist does.
A.Students identify and describe the parts and functions of plants and the plant cycle.
B.Students compare and contrast the stereotypical and "real" images and roles of scientists.

2. Students apply their knowledge of electricity to everyday life.
A.Students investigate the properties and types of electricity.
B.Students identify and construct simple, series, and parallel circuits, simple switches, and
conductors.
C.Students identify and investigate the parts of a light bulb.

3. Students apply their knowledge of the water cycle to everyday life.
A.Students identify and describe the origin and uses of water and the water cycle.
B.Students explore the relationship of the water cycle to weather.
C.Students identify and analyze methods of water purification and conservation.

4. Students understand animal cycles.
A.Students identify and describe the characteristics and survival needs of livingorganisms.
B.Students investigate the parts and life cycle of the butterfly
C.Students explore the interdependence of humans and butterflies.
