Science Outcomes
Grade 4

Abilities Outcomes
1. Students develop abilities in analysis, inquiry and design.
A. Students model what a scientist does as they engage in problem-posing, observing, predicting,
describing, comparing, measuring, data gathering, drawing conclusions, revising their ideas and
solutions about a variety of investigations.
B. Students collaboratively design and carry out a controlled study for separating a solution into its
component parts.
C. Students engage in the engineering design process as they design and build models of structures that
resist earthquake damage and simple machines that make work easier

2. Students develop math abilities.
A. Students create, read, and interpret graphs and charts.

3. Students develop communication abilities
A. Students develop communication and cooperative group skills as they discuss and share their
findings and write in their science journals.

Content Outcomes
1. Students engage in a controlled study about mixtures and solutions.
A.Students observe, describe, and compare the properties of mixtures and solutions.

2. Students apply their knowledge of geology to everyday life.
A.Students observe, describe, and compare the properties of rocks and minerals.
B.Students observe, describe, and compare constructive and destructive forces that are constantly
changing the planet.

3. Students apply their knowledge of simple machines to everyday life.
A.Students observe and describe six simple machines- levers, inclined plane, wedge, wheel, pulley,
and gears.
B.Students discuss the history and uses of simple machines.

3. Students understand nutrition, digestion, and food webs.
A.Students identify and describe the parts and functions of the digestive system.
B.Students describe physical and chemical digestion.
C.Students research and evaluate the food pyramid and what constitutes a healthy diet.
D.Students analyze food ingredient labels.
E.Students recognize and describe food chains and food webs.
