History of Vassar Road Elementary School
August, 2005

Vassar Road Elementary School is located in the Town of Poughkeepsie, New York in the heart of the Hudson Valey. It is one of ten elementary schools in the Wappingers Central School District.

Vassar Road School was constructed in 1957. It opened as a kindergarten to sixth grade school. For 34 years it remained a K-6 building. During the early 90’s, public schools in NY state were hit by a severe financial crisis. This crisis led to the closing of Kinry Road School for 3 years. During this time Vassar Road School was a K-5 school.

When Kinry Road School re-opened in 1994, it became a 3rd to 6th grade school and Vassar Road School was re-configured to a K-3 school. Vassar Road School operates today as the only primary school within the Wappingers Central School District. It is also one of the only K-3 schools within the mid-Hudson Valley region.

Fortunately the student population at Vassar Road School has remained steady over the last 5 years. This year’s enrollment is currently projected to be 460 students. Vassar Road School is also home to the district’s two primary-level communicatively impaired special education classes.

Vassar Road School has the advantage of providing a strong educational program in a nurturing, primary school atmosphere. It is committed to giving all its students a positive beginning to their educational experience.
