John Jay School Leadership Team

The purpose of the School Leadership Team is to develop and implement plans which will improve our school. We discuss  and impliment ideas that will have a positive impact on the students. We align those ideas with the goals of our district. This is a way for us to participate in school based planning and shared decision making.  We encourage parents and guardians to work with us and join our team!

SLT continues Interest Based Studyhalls

In the past year, the Wappingers Central School District has turned to the community for ideas to help develop a strategic plan for the district. The new plan will serve as a blueprint for change and as a framework for decision-making. During the collection of data, many community members and parents had stressed the importance of children optimizing their learning while in school. Parents had stressed that elective programs are needed to strike the interests of students and to expose them to potential passions they might consider pursuing beyond high school. From the collaboration of faculty, staff, students and community members, a new mission was created. “The mission of the Wappingers Central School District is to empower all of our students with the competencies and confidence to challenge themselves, to pursue their passions, and to realize their potential while growing as responsible members of their community.”

The School Leadership Team at John Jay High School has taken the newly developed mission statement and launched a pilot program that fully utilizes study hall to its maximum potential. The team has developed study halls for students to pursue and explore specialized interests and passions during school hours. Its focus is to promote engagement between student to student and student to staff relationships enhancing the climate and culture of the building while motivating students to attend their chosen interest and pursue potential passions. These study halls will be unique in the sense that they will be led completely by students. Teachers will be present in each location to provide classroom management; however, it will be up to the students to engage one another in the study hall based on the study hall interest chosen.
